The season for fly fishing in Dunedin and throughout Southland runs from October to April. Fly fishing in the South Island of New Zealand is at its peak from December through March as the mayfly hatches on the Mataura. Autumn (March-April) can be brilliant for catching larger fish as they feed up before spawning.
Primarily wild brown trout—the Mataura is nicknamed the Brown Trout Capital for good reason, with Rainbow trout also found in some nearby rivers. Fish typically range from 1–3kg, with larger specimens around during the mayfly hatching season.
Yes, you’ll need a Fish & Game NZ licence, which can be purchased online before you arrive, or I can help you sort one out. Whole season, weekly, and day licenses are available.
As one of the top fly fishing guides in the South Island of New Zealand, I don’t often let weather get in the way of our adventure. If the conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll reschedule, or I’ll find alternative water. With the surrounding rivers nearby, there’s almost always somewhere that’s fishable!
EXCELLENT Based on 19 reviews Posted on Explore59562774103Verified Awesome experience I had an awesome experience fishing with Julian. I have lots of experience fly fishing but have never been to New Zealand. Julian was able to give me the perfect NZ fishing experience I was looking for(sight fishing big browns in clear water with dry flies). He was able to put me on multiple very nice fish. I would highly recommend.Posted on Kevin WVerified Great time with Mataura Valley Trout Safaris My wife and I had a wonderful time fishing with Julian. He supplied all the right gear rods, flies and lunch! Even with the wind and rain he got us into the fish. For our first time in NZ and first time on NZ waters it was a remarkable day. I am an experienced fly fisherman and Julian taught this old dog some new techniques that I will use on my local waters. I hope to return and fish with Julian and Trout Safaris again. My only regret is I had only one day to enjoy tossing bugs with Julian. 5 Stars experience.Posted on Randolph46Verified The Real Deal in Gore Julian is your guide for the real New Zealand fishing experience in the Gore area. He has been guiding for 30+ years and knows the area intimately…and maybe some brown trout by their first name. I landed my personal best river brown trout with Julian on a gin clear small river and saw several others. So exciting. He is a real gentleman, conversant, knowledgeable and humorous. Book him…you won’t be sorry. Thx Julian.Posted on TheBonzoVerified Fun Fishing with Julian Julian really knows how to find the fish! And he and his wife pack a fabulous lunch. It was epic fly fishing for my irst trip to New Zealand.Posted on Kelly HVerified Biggest Brown Trout of my Life We fished with Julien Peters and he was an amazing guide and I would certainly recommend him as a trout guide. I caught a huge 8lb brown trout on a dry fly and it was most certainly the biggest trout I have ever caught in my life. Very friendly and knows the rivers all around Gore and Matarua because has fished these rivers all his life.Posted on Peter BVerified Mataura fly fishing with guide Julian Peters Fly fishing with Julian Peters was one of the best days for catching large brown trout on small dry flies and nymphs. Julian was great at spotting fish and putting me in the right position to make the best cast. I highly recommend Julian if you want a wonderful experience on the Mataura.Posted on azmichaelwillsVerified Don't look any further for a great guide! Julian was a fantastic guide! I am a total rookie and I had my first fish in the net within the first 45 minutes. He was incredibly patient and knew the river front to back. If one fly didn't work, he switched them and we almost always had instant action afterwards.Posted on AustinOzVerified Amazing Trip with a Superb Guide/Teacher It was our first trip to New Zealand, and I was so lucky to find Julian Peters had an opening a day I had free. Lesson: book early!I could tell Julian would be a guide I liked because he started with a simple email interview to inquire about my goals and hopes: Land a fish, multiple opportunities, experience NZ splendor, & learn something new.Julian communicated prior to our trip as needed, which involved several back and forth of texts/emails (my preference). He was also extremely easy going as my teenage son kept bouncing between going and skipping this outing - Julian rolled with it. Plus he helped us get the necessary equipment as I did not bring my own - I didn't want go thru customs and carrying it during a tour for a single day of fishing. Our day started with communication as a traffic accident delayed our pick-up by 30 minutes, after which we were off to the river. Once we found a section and geared up, we went to find our first trout. I have never experienced sight casting to trout like this. The Mataura River is gin clear and the browns were out, not hiding in the shade or on the bank or under a boulder.I spent the first hour (really all day) learning how to accurately cast/present to them. Julian was masterful coaching me all the way. Seriously just the perfect amount of showing how to do it and then occasionally giving a tip here or there as I figured it out. I've fly fished for 15+ years and there were a few occasions where I've needed this accuracy my home waters. What I learned in this outing was the corrections/technique I needed to perform consistently.I spent the first hour casting to a fish that never spooked away. Julian changed the flies up a few times and we finally got the fish to bite and landed it.Afterwards it was my son's turn. He hooked into a few fish but lost them. That said, Julian coached him through the process with the same steady hand - perfect amount of tips when needed without overwhelming.Best recommendation I can give is I will hire Julian again when I return to NZ for future fishing trips!Posted on Ceturner180@gmail.comVerified Brown Trout Fishing My friend Ted Mathews and I made arrangement to fish will guide Julian Peters of Mataura Valley Trout Safari. I have fished for years from Alaska to Argentina but Ted had never fly fished. Julian selected a Winston rod for Ted and expertly tutored him on how to cast. Ted caught a beautiful brown. Julian has an uncanny ability to spot trout. Ted and I had a wonderful and memorable experience fishing the Wiitahuna River with Julian. I highly recommend Julian to anyone interested in fishing for trout in New Zealand. Carlton E Turner, FL USAPosted on IanBVerified Great guide - I would definitely return ! Though I have fished for years in the UK this was my first experience of true guided sight fishing in such clear waters. Julian was very professional and after "testing the water" on one of the main rivers we moved up to a high valley stream. This gave me a true experience of sighted fishing for NZ brown trout in small streams. Good advice and frequent changes of fly options yielded a number of takes and some landed fish. I would highly recommend Julian to all levels of fisherman and look forward to a future return!
