The season for fly fishing in Dunedin and throughout Southland runs from October to April. Fly fishing in the South Island of New Zealand is at its peak from December through March as the mayfly hatches on the Mataura. Autumn (March-April) can be brilliant for catching larger fish as they feed up before spawning.
Primarily wild brown trout—the Mataura is nicknamed the Brown Trout Capital for good reason, with Rainbow trout also found in some nearby rivers. Fish typically range from 1–3kg, with larger specimens around during the mayfly hatching season.
Yes, you’ll need a Fish & Game NZ licence, which can be purchased online before you arrive, or I can help you sort one out. Whole season, weekly, and day licenses are available.
As one of the top fly fishing guides in the South Island of New Zealand, I don’t often let weather get in the way of our adventure. If the conditions aren’t suitable, we’ll reschedule, or I’ll find alternative water. With the surrounding rivers nearby, there’s almost always somewhere that’s fishable!
EXCELLENT Based on 66 reviews Posted on Stephen DVerified Had a blast Amazing wild trout and fabulous weather, food, scenery and thrills. We caught several fish; one over 26 inches in length.Posted on Danielle CVerified The complete trout retreat We stayed at Barry and Diane's magnificent bed and breakfast. Our room was spacious and had everything you could possibly want. The breakfast was 5 star with homemade jams, biscuits and seasonal produce.Barry took us out on a windy day but he managed to keep us out of the wind. He's local knowledge was amazing.Diane made us a beautiful lunch and we continued fishing until 630. They also helped us plan the rest of our holiday, so we didn't miss attractions that we would have without there recommendations. Can't wait to return asso many of there visitors! We are hooked!Posted on DDutch01Verified Great as expected! My wife and I decided to try fly fishing in the South Island since I’ve experienced some of my best outings in the north island years ago.Based on TripAdvisor’s reviews/recommendations we scheduled a one day outing with Barry. Our 2 nights stay with Dianne and Barry was a refreshing change from all the hotels we’ve stayed during our one month in NZ. We were welcomed into their home and made to feel like old friends. During our outing Barry succeeded in having my wife catch and land 3 good sized brown trout on a flyrod. My day also resulted in catching multiple fish...this was a truly memorable day in the river. I have not experienced this quality of fly fishing in our home water of the Pacific NW.If you enjoy fly fishing, a day on the river with Barry is an experience you can’t miss.Posted on Bill BVerified A Master of the Waters in Southland NZ We worked out the other night that my friends and I first engaged Barry over ten years ago and been out with him most years since. Apr 2018 presented some huge challenges with wind and high/dirty rivers and Barry was great in re-arranging our schedule and locations to ensure the best experience. We particularly appreciated his taking us to fish his (and our) favourite river. His patience in ensuring we all got fish knows no bounds. Barry's skill and knowledge has always been the key to our success here.I encourage everyone who visits this wonderful part of the world to get out on the water with him - regardless of your skill levels or absence of equipment (he can provide rods/waders at no extra cost). Just keep your fingers crossed that the lunch includes my favourite - Diane's bacon and egg pie 😁. Photo shows Barry recording a recent success 'on a river somewhere'.Posted on Dennis TVerified If you ever wanted to fly fish. We’ve been living in New Zealand for several weeks. My wife is a fly fisherman and asked me several times to go with her. We had a free weekend and she signed us up to stay at the Wentworth Heights BnB and to spend a day fishing on the Mataura.I had never made a cast so Barry gave me a lesson in the backyard. The next morning after a wonderful breakfast, he kitted us up and away we went. It was a lovely day. Barry taught us a lot about fishing, brown trout, local history, geography, geology and culture. I caught my first fish!Barry’s experience, patience and calm and friendly demeanor made for a memorable experience.I think I’d like to go again.Posted on Coff56Verified Paul and Peter from Canberra fish the Mataura River in Gore Our guide Barry was excellent over the one and a half days fishing. He put us onto fish, was there to help with any wind knots and nothing was too much trouble. Overall a great experience and one I will look forward to enjoying again in the future.Posted on Dominic BVerified Local knowledge is what you need I'm pretty experienced, but knew a few local tips would stand me in good shape. Barry is a great man to spend a day fishing and chatting with, I caught quite a few fish, shared some great dry fly stealth moments, and reassured myself that the following few days on the river (Waikaia, it was local to where I was staying and a great river) would be productive: they were. Lovely lunch too. Many thanks Barry, my recommendation for any experienced fishermen new to this bit of NZ is that you'll really get the most out of your trip and enjoy a fine day's fishing.Posted on Melinda GVerified Amazing Day on the Mataura! We had such an incredible day fishing the Mataura river with Barry! It was truly a highlight of our stay in Gore and of our vacation in New Zealand. Barry was very easy going and was genuinely just as excited as us every time we had one on! He took us to some great spots that we definitely wouldn't have found on our own and helped with every tangle I had with a smile. The lunches were homemade and so delicious with hot tea/coffee to offer on a chilly day. We loved our day and would highly recommend booking with Barry!Posted on CompdogVerified 10 brown trout in the net! As a fishing guide Barry Perkins really knows the Mataura River, and I had a great day with him as my guide. Barry first made sure my fishing gear was in order, that I had a license, and had appropriate clothing for a cool, cloudy day. The fishing started slowly, but picked up steadily as the day progressed. I liked the way Barry had me thoroughly covering the water with my casts. By late afternoon I figured that I had caught nine trout, but I didn't mention that to Barry. When I caught the tenth one, Barry shook my hand, and said: "Congratulations, that's ten trout in the net." I guess he was counting too. I haven't had many days as productive as that one. I fished nymphs almost the entire day, but I think that Barry sensed that I would enjoy casting a few dry flies, so I did that as well. We certainly got a full day in. I fished pretty much continuously until after 6 pm. Barry made the day a memorable one for me! That evening Barry directed me to five or so fishing access locations on the Mataura River near Gore that I could fish on my own after the day he guided me. In addition, he recommended other guides and rivers to fish elsewhere in New Zealand. If I get the chance to return to New Zealand and the Mataura River, Barry Perkins would be my choice as a fishing guide.Posted on Bill SVerified Barry is simply the best! A friend and I were privileged to spend a special day fly fishing The Mataura with Barry Perkins. Barry knows his waters, his sport, and is the consummate guide to take you on the best brown trout water I have ever fished. He is extremely attentive to your style of fishing and whether you're an experienced angler or a novice, Barry style of guiding and teaching will make you a better fisherman. Barry s a strict conservationist towards these beautiful browns, and puts you onto the fish very quickly. A wonderful lunch provided by his wife Diane adds to the flavor of the day. We caught and released over 8 lovely browns, plus missed a number of hookups as well. We will fish with him again!
